Heart-wrenching photos mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz

Tuesday is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking the passage of 70 years since the Jan. 27, 1945, liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps built and operated in occupied Poland by Nazi Germany. As many as 1.1 million people, mostly Jews from across Europe, were killed there in gas chambers or by systematic starvation, forced labor and disease.

Why don’t American plantations have something of this sort
Like a memorial or something

^^^^^^^^cause we aren’t white…

Okay…your blog is titled “decolonise all things” but you further US cultural imperialism by imposing US race politics on Europe?

Your insinuation that the Holocaust victims had “white privilege” is thoroughly offensive when light skin didn’t do shit for them in Nazi Germany because it’s their ethnicity which made them subhuman in the eyes of the Nazis. They could be the most “Aryan-looking” person with fair skin, blonde hair or blue eyes but if they were Jewish, Rroma or Slavic it wouldn’t save them. You may see them as “white” in the US but they are most certainly NOT absorbed into privilege in Europe because Europe sees ethnicity in addition to colour. Yes, ethnicity matters, and the presence of non-white people like me in Europe hardly erases these fault lines because they are deep and long predate even modern constructs of whiteness.

Till today, European Jews do not get seen as “one of us” by majority European ethnic groups and face violent antisemitism. Rroma people? Please tell me how much “white privilege” they have in Europe with all these neo-Nazi parties like the Golden Dawn, Jobbik and Front National spewing anti-Semitic and anti-Roma sentiment? Hell, even Slavic people like Polish people face rampant racism in Western Europe today. Why did the Irish and the English have a long-running conflict right up to the 21st century? Again, for the simple fact that European racism takes on ethnic dimensions in addition to colourism.

Is privilege having neo-Nazi parties in the EU Parliament which routinely proclaim hatred of your ethnic group? And in the first place not all European Jews are light-skinned or look “white” by US standards because there are Jewish people from North Africa and the Middle-East living in Europe too. Like those 4 French Jews who were murdered in the Paris kosher grocery store. Many Rroma people don’t at all look what would be considered “white” either, precisely because of their non-European origins.

Insinuating the Holocaust victims are white completely flattens and distorts the power structure into a UScentric paradigm because Jewish and Rroma people have always been seen as an “Other”, in big part due to their non-European origins. Sure, Slavic people like Russians, Ukrainians and Polish people are probably considered “white” but they were marked down for extermination because of their ethnicity all the same. And it was hardly so simple as a “white/POC” dichotomy because the Japanese were considered honorary Aryans because Hitler admired their culture, not just because of the Axis alliance.

Injecting US race politics into foreign contexts IS a furtherance of US cultural imperialism and thoroughly offensive erasure of experiences because you’re forcing them through an American filter which distorts it.
