Why does Hollywood keep doing this to the disability community?
Well, I dislike the comparison to “if we did this to other communities” because SHIT IS DONE to other communities
but holy hell…. FUCK EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MOVIE, THE BOOK AND ANYONE WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS OKAY
The problem is I have notice that with other communities the people in that community will at least be vocal about how aborant it is. The thing is anyone can be disabled and be apart of any other of those communities. And yet people in those other communities will treat disabled people like this even though they don’t like it done to them. I kid you not. You should see a lot of poc beauty or politics blogs. For that matter feminism blogs. Lots of them don’t even reconize that you can be oppressed for just being disabled or that people within their own communities are struggling differently than the rest of their community. Their just chalk it up for just being that race or gender. I kid you not. There are people within the communities talking against it. It seems disabled people in any community are just used as an escape.
As someone who belongs to 3 oppressed groups (Black, disabled, female), this is why I harp on intersectionality of oppressions/marginalizations.
It’s utterly disheartening that the disabled experience is grossly absent during those discussions or on those platforms, & fail to consider how being disabled and of color, being disabled and female, or the intersectionality of all 3 memberships greatly affects people like me & millions of others. (Along with other memberships, btw.)
There’s so much work that has to be done, & we have to be vocal about it. Being silent furthers the perpetuation, & I know that myself, & many others, are fighting against that.
I read the book in November and found it horrifying. (Disabled and female, for reference.) Book Review: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
There’s gonna be a sequel to this book?!?!?! Why???? How is this a romance???
For once, this is NOT actually a better love story than Twilight.
